NewPages Blog: The Decline of the English Department
I shared this in my Google Reader, but figured it deserved a little more pub here in Altruistic Bullsh*t. Shouts to NewPages for posting this on their blog as well.
Now, I’m not a English major or professor, but some portions of this article relate to me directly, i.e. the paradoxical choice between a practical degree and a literary one. In any event, I don’t want to dismiss the piece as “whiny,” because I think valid points are made. That said, something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe because, stats aside, the prevailing idea within the article wasn’t a novel one for me. William Chace does touch on the rising costs of college and I think, as an outsider, that’s the crux of the argument and further discussion on inter-disciplinary schisms and factions had far less interest to me. Return of Investment.
Anyway, read and see for yourself. My link leads to the NewPages post. If you want to jump straight to the article, here you go. Let me know what you think.
