So the word’s out—kinda. Invites are making their rounds for Apple’s 1.27.10 “event,” where they’re expected to announce (and finally confirm) the existence of a touch-screen tablet. Its size, according to the rumor mills, can be anywhere from 7″ to 10.5″. Maybe it’ll run the iPhone OS, maybe it’ll run OSX (or a scaled down version, which would make it the iPhone OS).

Now, despite my iPod Touch and Macbook, I’m not an Apple douche; that is, I’m not a fanboy enthralled with all things Jobs. So while I’m curious to see this tablet (if it even exists), I can’t think of a reason why I should own this gadget. Sure, I could use it as an e-reader, but the Kindle would cost me a fraction of the iTablet’s rumored price of $1000. I owned a netbook for a time, and sold it to my brother, so I’m not in the market for a mobile internet device with light word processing capabilities—and besides, there are these things called “smartphones,” such as my DROID, that serves this exact purpose.

We’ll see in a week. When the spec sheet and, you know, an actual announcement of the device are released, I’ll have more to say. As of today, however, the tablet seems unnecessary. Then again, I once thought two-way pagers were dope, so…
